A Conversation with... Orazio and Pino Luciano

The workshop run by Orazio Luciano and his son Pino lays in the area of San Giovanni a Teduccio, in the South-Western part of Naples.

This story of success dates back to 1992, when Orazio, after many years of service in companies such as Kiton and Isaia, quits his job to start his own business with a colleague. Initially the turnover struggles to get off the ground, until the business partner backs out and Pino joins the sartoria to renovate it. His contribution will be crucial: very quickly he notices that the company needs to open up to the fast-growing Eastern market, already showing in the 90’s an increasing demand for the Italian sartorial product. Drawing inspiration from his overseas trips, Pino also modernizes the classic jacket models, making them slimmer and preferring to wear jackets without shoulder padding, with vintage fabrics, patch pockets and no lining. In 2000, with some obstacles deriving from the Italian bureaucracy, they get their first stand at Pitti Uomo, in the Affinità Elettive Pavillion, but far away from the big names of the tailoring industry. Few years later, thanks to their skills, they get to the Central Pavillion, Penthouse floor, Area Classico Italia, just where the big ones are.

    The Boss Control

Father and son, humble and passionate about their job, clarify that the path to the current success has not been smooth, but by now gratifications and satisfactions are notmissing, like when the 80-year-old Mr. Kiton, aka Ciro Paone, despite his uncertain health conditions, during the last Pitti Uomo wanted to personally congratulate with Orazio on his achievements, being him one of his former empolyees.

Their sartoria is a one of a kind, compared to those I have visited so far. Neither it is the typical workshop with few skilled master tailors inside nor it is a structured company such as Kiton. This hybrid saves the appeal of the sartorial product, mixing it with a businesslike organization, that allows to offer different product lines, from the RTW to the true bespoke, including intermediate lines featuring less hand-made stitching. In 2012 they launched the S11 Jacket, a slim fit model, one and a half centimeter shorter than the classic one, with narrow armhole and camicia sleeve.

Twentyfive Italian workers, with and average age between 26 and 27, work full time in this microcosm that churns out true handcrafted masterpieces; everyone here has a specific function: pocket sewing, lapel cutting, buttonholes, shoulders, lining, everything rigorously hand-made. Moreover, as a tribute to the tailoring tradition, the ironing is realized first with the press then with an hot flatiron and damp cloth, whereas the trousers are outsourced to a trouser-maker who exclusively works for them.

The percentage of foreign customers of this sartoria is impressive: 98% of the production is allocated to American and Eastern markets, and the remaining part to the Italian one.
