    Dell'Oglio - Sicilian style since 1890

    The article - L'articolo
A humble, well-educated, elegant and passionate person. This and more is Mario dell’Oglio, fourth generation leading the family-run boutique. After a short expericence as an Economics teacher at Palermo University, he decides to dedicate himself to the business founded by Santi dell’Oglio, his great-grandfather, in 1890. “We used to sell hats, shirts and walking sticks hailing from England” – recalls father Vincenzo, a true Sicilian gentleman, in his sartorial three-piece suit and 25-year-old polished shoes, even more charming thanks to their age. Grandfather Mario, in the 40’s, when every man used to go to the tailor’s to dress, was the first to bring ready-to-wear garments in Sicily. “You are crazy, nobody will ever buy it” – allegedly he was told. At that time, wearing off-the-peg jackets was unthinkable “Nevertheless, by the end of the season we had sold everything” - he says smiling. Dell'Oglio family - back in the first years of the XXth century - already used to advise the aristocrats and the Sicilian upper-class as for suits and accessories.“In the 40's we had made-to-measure hats in the shop, thanks to a futuristic tool measuring the shape of the customer's head, so as to ensure the perfect fitting” - says Vincenzo Dell'Oglio. In the 30’s grandfather Mario, son of Santi, will start selling British hats from brands such as Lock; Vincenzo, the third generation, opened up a new shop, whereas Mario, in 2000 launched D’O Libertà, the third family boutique, entirely  focused on womenswear.
Today Dell’Oglio has three boutiques in the Sicilian city of Palermo: one for her and two for him, divided in sportswear and classic. In addition to the retail of some big brands, they have their own private label collection, generating the biggest part of the revenues, they offer a made-to-measure service with Caccioppoli fabrics and also sell online through and innovative e-commerce platform. Mario, a true Sicilian gentleman is very passionate about his job and wants to communicate a Sicilian style without the usual cliché, yet with “strong hues, contrasts and contaminations” – as he likes to say. His passion is unabashed and contagious: he does not like coloured pocket squares, preferring white ones over the others, the side vents of his jackets are 1 cm less deeper than the pockets and a mix of different fabrics is his signature. The city of the “quattro canti”, mentioned in the famous Gattopardo novel and result of a mix of architectural styles and different cultures is very well linked with the story of dell’Oglio family, that is well appreciated in the city. The Italian story of this family is beautiful and must be communicated to younger generations.
