    About the Smoking

    The Article - L'articolo

Tuxedo for the Americans, dinner jacket in England, smoking in Italy, France and Germany, this dress holds out unbeaten against the stylistic decadence of our times, common cause of the gradual disuse of tailcoat and tight. Beware not to confuse it with the authentic smoking jacket, in coloured velvet fabric and shawl collar, that English gentlemen used to wear just to go to the smoking room, later wearing back the dinner jacket so as not to annoy the ladies with smelling garments.
The smoking jacket can be single or doublebreasted, rigorously without vents and with peak or shawl lapels. The latter option of the shawl lapel has been allegedly made famous by the renowned Duke of Windsor. The fabric is generally quite rigid and the jacket colours are black, blue and white. If on the one hand the black colour is classic and reassuring, on the other hand the midnight blue smoking is very elegant and for experts only, made up of dark blue jacket with black satin lapels and trousers of the same shade with an external satin trim. The white smoking jacket should be worn only at elegant outdoor events and never be combined with white trousers. The smoking trousers are black or dark blue, never white, with one external satin trim for the smoking and two for the tailcoat, but mostly they should be never cuffed, since it is considered too casual.
According to the etiquette, the bowtie for the smoking must be black; on the contrary, it can be white when matched with a tailcoat. Normally the shirt features double cuffs and vertical folds on the front till the waist; as for the shoes, the etiquette wants them to be formal, whether they be lace-ups or tassel loafers. In the end, as for the cummerbund, useful to cover the point where the shirt is tucked in the trousers, in the humble opinion of the writer we can get rid of it if the trousers already feature an high waistband.
