    A conversation with... Salvatore Ambrosi

I meet Salvatore Ambrosi in his workshop of Via Nicotera 103, right behind Piazza del Plebiscito, in a working-class neighbourhood beside the rich Chiaia. Salvatore's shop is a shock to the eye. It's decorated with such simple furnishings that you would never expect it to be where expert artisans turn out trousers for the world's wealthiest men and exclusive Asian buyers. After seeing the hardworking people that he employs and the quality of their production, it all seems to make sense. Salvatore, 33 years old, started this craft at only 8, with his father in that same workshop, in Montecalvario, in a maze of alleys with tiny apartments, where the piecework is still in use.

    More - Altro

After an internship at Kiton, he occasionally works for some Neapolitan tailors shops. Then he encounters Michael Alden, a bespoke specialist, who publishes a post about him on his blog The London Lounge. Soon after, a rapid and unexpected course of events, and Salvatore meets some of the most influential buyers from China, Japan and Korea, who will pave the way for him on the big and demanding Oriental market. Seven years ago, the first trip to New York to meet two private customers. “I didn’t even speak a word of English – he tells – so I bought a flight ticket for my uncle, emigrant to Baltimore, so that he could help me with the language.”

Despite his reputation as one of the best trouser makers in the world, Salvatore remains a genuine and cheerful person - humble, but proud of the quality of his product. “Some buyers even place orders for several hundred thousand Euros. You work for them for an entire year, but then they might abandon you to offer different brands to their clientele” - he comments while speaking of the drawbacks of this craft. Among others, he collaborates with Villa del Korea of Seoul, Tie your Tie of Tokyo and The Armoury of Hong Kong, high-flown ambassadors of the made in Italy in the East. His private customers come from fifteen countries in the world, like New York, California, United Kingdom and Germany.

Interestingly enough, Salvatore doesn’t disregard the direct contact with his customers: in addition to his trips all over the world, he still sews the trousers, availing himself of the collaboration of the father and of some accurately-selected tailors, both internal and external. Given the high demand, delivery time is three months.

At the beginning of the year he informs the shops about his availability; once there, he takes measurement of the customers, makes the trousers back in Italy and comes back to the shop just for the first fitting. The whole process is done without delegating anything. Eight working-hours are needed to make an Ambrosi trouser, that even features an hand-stitched center-back, because, he explained, with the hand you can create a curved line, something that no machine in the world can reproduce.
