A (Mexican) Conversation with... Antonio Solito

During my trip to Mexico last summer I had the pleasure to meet Antonio Solito in Mexico City, Polanco neighbourhood. He is son of art. His father Antonio Solito Senior, who passed away some years ago, was a renowned Master tailor, just like his beloved Neapolitan brother, Gennaro.
    The Interview - L'intervista

Antonio Senior moves to Mexico City in 1982. Hailing from Naples and with the sartorial art in his hands, thanks to his skills and contacts, gets to sew a suit for Mr. Lopez Portillo, President of the Republic of Mexico at that time. The feedback has been so positive that later on he will get to sew suits for all the Presidents of the Country, nobody excluded.

Hidden from the public and from indiscreet eyes, the sartoria is based on a two-floor elegant house in the refined Polanco neighbourhood. Getting in, a visitor can breathe air of Naples, despite being oversea. In this place, the linings, shoulder pads, buttons and even the canvas of the jackets come from Napoli. As a cozy framework, high quality liqueurs and precious sigars. The result is a “sartorial club for gentlemen” in the heart of the wealthy part of the city.

Antonio, after the premature passing of his father, manages now the sartoria. Some jackets are made by the skilled hands of Gennaro, the uncle in Napoli. “Many Mexicans prefer the jacket with three buttons, very comfortable and the trousers with low crotch” – he explains to me. Antonio, on the other hand, prefers slim, two-button or three-rolled-two jackets, with “manica a camicia” and half lining on the inside. Finally, instead of the usual bemberg or silk, as a lining here they stitch the same fabric used for the jacket.
