A conversation with... Giampaolo Alliata

Dear readers, I hereby share with you a conversation with Mr. Giampaolo Alliata, which I had the honour to meet in person. This was one of the interviews I really enjoyed doing most so far. Giampaolo is a real role model for men's elegance and timeless kindness; we talked about his background, his trips around the world, his style icons and his interesting concept of elegance. Hope you enjoy your reading and some of the new pictures from his private life!

Cari lettori, condivido qui di seguito con voi una conversazione con il Sig. Giampaolo Alliata, che ho avuto l'onore di conoscere di persona. E' stata una delle interviste che ho più apprezzato fare fino ad ora: Giampaolo è un vero esempio di eleganza e gentillezza senza tempo. Abbiamo parlato del suo background, dei suoi viaggi oltreoceano, delle sue icone di stile e del suo interessante concetto di eleganza. Who are you?

The background: My father in the 70’s owned a storage room and was selling garments from Kiton, Isaia and Valentini to retailers such as Bardelli, Al Bazar, Gemelli, Tincati, Adriano from Brescia and other high-end boutiques.

Since I was not feeling talented for the accounting studies, I decided to drop out and spend my time on my real passions; thus, with the help of my father, I moved to Miami for one year, to work for Galliani, a menswear shop selling Italian brands such as Brioni, Kiton, Zegna, Burini, Isaia, etc... In 1978, I started working as an agent for my father, selling garments of Valentini, Luigi Borrelli and Sutor Mantellassi. During the 80’s, I worked for Enrico Isaia: we were buying Harris Tweed or Alsport fabrics in England and Scotland, trying to offer a new product in Italy, with a more refined taste; we aimed to turn a more rigid shetland in a softer lambswool. At the same time, I had a brief experience as a buyer for a shop in Livigno: I was buying Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Prada and Ralph Lauren, thus, I have been working closer to the high-fashion industry. After this period, I resumed my collaboration with Isaia, choosing the collections for the US market and doing trunk shows for them in the United States, Japan and Europe (during one of these trips I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Kamoshita of United Arrows and Mr. Nakamura of Beams). This experience with Isaia lasted ten years, until I have been contacted by Lino, to work with him at Al Bazar.

Il background:

Mio padre negli anni '70 aveva un deposito e vendeva capi di Kiton, Isaia e Valentini a negozi quali Bardelli, Al Bazar, Gemelli, Tincati, Adriano di Brescia e altre boutique di prestigio. Non sentendomi portato per gli studi di ragioneria, ho deciso di dedicarmi alle mie passioni e con l'aiuto di mio padre sono andato a vivere un anno a Miami per lavorare da “Galliani”, un negozio di abbigliamento con marchi esclusivamente italiani (Brioni, Kiton, Zegna, Burini, Isaia ecc...). 

Nel ‘78 ho iniziato a lavorare come agente per mio padre, trattando marchi quali Valentini, Borrelli e Sutor Mantellassi. 

Durante gli anni ‘80 ho iniziato a lavorare con Enrico Isaia: compravamo tessuti Harris Tweed o Alsport in Inghilterra e Scozia, cercando di offire in Italia un prodotto nuovo con un gusto migliore; li trasformavamo da una “mano shetland” (rigida) ad una piu “lambswool” (piu morbida). Contemporaneamente ho fatto una breve esperienza come buyer presso un negozio di Livigno in cui compravo Dolce & Gabbana, Armani, Prada e Ralph Lauren e altri marchi. Dopo questo periodo ho ripreso a collaborare stabilmente con Isaia, scegliendo i campionari per il mercato USA e facendo trunk show per loro negli Stati Uniti, Giappone e Europa (dove ho incontrato il Signor Kamoshita di United Arrows ed il Signor Nakamura di Beams). Quest’esperienza con Isaia è durata dieci anni, finchè non ho ricevuto, nel 2003, la proposta di Lino per lavorare con lui da Al Bazar.

 

Distinctive features: a tatoo on the shoulder representing an american eagle, done after finishing the military service in Caserta, as a symbol of freedom. The tatoo to me has nothing to do with fashion, it just serves as a milestone to engrave on my body important experiences of my life, both positive and negative. I also have a tiger and a dragoon on the forearms, tatooed after my overseas in Japan.

Segni particolari: un’aquila americana sulla spalla, tatuata alla fine della leva militare a Caserta, in segno libertà. Il tatuaggio per me non è un fattore moda, serve a fissare il ricordo di un’esperienza importante sul proprio corpo, positiva o negativa che sia. Ho anche un drago e una tigre sugli avambracci, frutto dell'esperienza in Oriente.

 

How would you describe your own style?

A new classic, with all my personality.

Un nuovo classico con tutta la mia personalità

  

What is your earliest memory related to menswear and style?

My parents: my father was an agent of Kiton and Isaia in the sixties/seventies, my Mom a sales woman in a small men’s shop. So, since I was a kid, I breathed different ways of style.

Qual è il Suo primo ricordo legato allo stile e all’abbigliamento da uomo?

I miei genitori: mio padre era un agente di Kiton e Isaia negli anni sessanta/settanta, mentre mia madre faceva la venditrice in un piccolo negozio di abbigliamento da uomo in Porta Venezia. Di conseguenza, sin da bambino ho sempre respirato diverse tipologie di stile.

 

What inspires you / How do you find inspiration?

Inspiration comes from inside; books, old movies help, but also travelling around the world opens your mind. I do not have so much time to travel now, so I like visiting blogs like The Sartorialist, The Bespoke Dudes and The Noble Custom Clothier

Cosa la ispira / Come trova ispirazione?

L’ispirazione viene dall’interno: libri e vecchi film aiutano, ma anche viaggare per il mondo offre spunti sempre nuovi. Adesso non ho più tanto tempo per viaggiare, quindi mi piace visitare blog come The Sartorialist, The Bespoke Dudes, The Noble Custom Clothier. 

 

If you had to name one person who influenced on your style, who would that be?

I can’t say only one man, but a mix of Vittorio De Sica (Class), Marcello Mastroianni (sprezzatura), Cary Grant (elegance/Irony) and Steve McQueen (Wildness). As for the people I met in my life, apart from my father, I would like to thank Enrico Isaia for passing on to me his knowledge of fabrics and, of course, Lino for giving me the courage to dare with colours.

Una persona che ha influenzato il Suo stile?

Non posso indicare solo una persona, ma un mix di Vittorio De Sica (classe), Marcello Mastroianni (sprezzatura), Cary Grant (eleganza/ironia) e Steve McQueen (sregolatezza).

Per quanto riguarda le persone che sul lavoro mi hanno aiutato a costruire il mio stile, oltre a mio padre, ringrazio Enrico Isaia per avermi trasmesso la sua conoscenza dei tessuti e, naturalmente, Lino che mi ha dato il coraggio di osare nei colori.

What does “elegance” mean to you?

Elegance is a mix of elements. It’s a matter of education, in the first place - as my father taught me. It’s not only about dressing well, but also being humble; it’s okay to go bold sometimes, but without exaggerating. Being elegant also includes knowing the good manners, treating well the others and your lady; maybe you reach it at a certain age, as a result of all the personal experiences and a major self-awareness. We have to be positive, face life’s troubles with a smile and know how to get up after falling.

In the end, try not to imitate other people, find the right inspiration and, if you are not able…come to Al Bazar.

Cos’è l’eleganza per lei?

L’eleganza è un insieme di cose: è innanzitutto questione di educazione e mio padre mi ha catechizzato in questo senso. Non è solo sapersi vestire, ma anche essere umili; è giusto osare, ma senza esagerare. Essere eleganti consiste anche nel saper come stare a tavola, nell’essere gentili con gli altri e con la propria donna, e poi credo che la vera eleganza, in genere, si raggiunga ad una certa etá, come risultato di tante esperienze personali e di una maggiore consapevolezza di sè. Bisogna cercare di essere positivi, affrontare la vita col sorriso e sapersi alzare dopo le difficolta'. Infine, mai imitare gli altri, trovare la giusta ispirazione e, se proprio non ci riuscite…venite da Al Bazar!
